To make the pre-dough, mix the flour and sugar in a bowl. Make a well in the centre. Mix the yeast and lukewarm water together, pour into the well in the flour and mix in a little flour from the sides. Leave the pre-dough to rise in a warm place for about 15 minutes.

For the main dough, add water, yeast, flour, salt and oil to the pre-dough and knead everything into a smooth dough. Leave the dough to rest for 5–10 minutes, then cover with a plate and leave in a warm place to rise until doubled in size.

Knead the dough briefly once more, then divide it into two or three equal-sized pieces as desired. Roll the pieces of dough into long strands with your hands, plait them into a braid and leave to rise for another 15 minutes.

Mix the soya drink with a little turmeric and the sugar, then brush the plait with this mixture. Place the plait on a baking tray lined with baking paper and leave to rise for a further 5 minutes. Bake the plait in the oven at 180 degrees (fan) for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
